September 2022

Savvy Says...
Dear Rotarians of District 5170,

September is designated month for Basic Education and Literacy. Every club I visit does at least one project to support literacy in the community, both local and global. Our Rotarians have many interests and are happy to support the passions of club champions. Everyone is passionate about educating the next generation. As part of our effort to increase public awareness of who we are and what we do, our Community Service Chairs are collecting photographs from your “back-to-school” projects. The sooner you send photographs to them, the quicker they can create a beautiful collage and send it out through various media platforms. https://rotarydistrict5170.org/sitepage/community-service We are also highlighting the Seven Areas of Focus at our Avenues of Service event on October 15 at Mission College in Santa Clara. Please register to attend this very inspiring event to see all that is being accomplished by Rotarians and Interactors locally and globally. https://bit.ly/D5170AOS2022

The Membership trend continues with many clubs adding new members. Top honors go to Hayward and Fremont Bridge who added 7 and 4 Rotarians respectively. We have many small yet mighty clubs like Milpitas, Sunnyvale Sunrise, Silicon Valley San Jose, Fremont Morning, Almaden Valley-Willow Glen, Newark, Evergreen Valley, and Oakland Uptown. They build Little Libraries, hold “Chili Pepper” challenges, host Crab dinners and poker nights, distribute “Pies for purpose” or hold drive-by-BBQs to raise funds for their projects. Clubs like Fremont noon have very generous members who donate to their club foundation and to The Rotary Foundation. The eClub of Silicon Valley Smart Village has members all over the world and propose a Program of scale for greater impact. I wish to thank all the twelve clubs I visited in September for taking the time to explain their activities and sharing challenges and accomplishments. I am very humbled by their service to humanity. Membership Team Offers Invitation Card
DG Savita says, “Invite your friends to join our humanitarian efforts” -- Membership team offers this warm invitation card.

We developed a nifty card with information and a QR code to help every Rotarian invite a friend to become a member. It has simple facts about Rotary and all our Areas of Focus. When you scan the QR code, you are directed to a simple form. The friend is requested to input basic information including city of choice. The membership team will forward the information to our AGs and Membership chairs to follow-up.

Where can you use the cards? Everywhere!

Volunteers Needed at Interact Fall Leadership Conference
Interact District 5170's biggest event, Fall Leadership Conference (FLC) is just around the corner! For over a decade, this event has singularly inspired tens of thousands of Bay Area students to raise over $1 million dollars, and donate over 1 million hours of time in our local communities.

As our high school Interactors are working hard to make a difference in our community, we hope that you can help us make a difference in their lives by volunteering for this event!
Volunteers are super vital to this event's success as your role ensures the safety of our students while the support provides the smoothness for our conference.

This year's FLC will take place on Sunday 10/09/2022. Volunteers will be needed from 8:00AM to 4:00PM. Volunteer responsibilities include are not limited to:
  • chaperoning the event
  • helping out with and during registration
  • assisting with lunch distribution
  • assisting with merch distribution
  • assisting/supporting workshops
If you or someone you know (that's over 18 years old) are interested in volunteering for FLC 2022, please fill out the link here: https://forms.gle/G2euodYtzwzkRsHa7

Rotary’s efforts to eradicate Polio from the face of our planet - personal experience photo-journal by DGN Jill Duerig
District 5170's District Governor Nominee, Jill Duerig, joined a Rotary polio immunization day in India. After training by the World Health Organization, she was able to be part of a local team of health workers and gave many children the oral polio vaccine. Thank you DGN Jill for joining Rotary’s efforts to eradicate Polio!

The polio immunization process was in three parts. The first day, Rotarians worked with local health care workers to immunize those under five who came to various stations around the "village" and, when a child was immunized, we marked their left pinky fingertips with a purple marker so we'd know they had received the vaccine. Cute way of checking age - teeth and arm length (as kids grow, they can reach over their heads and scratch the opposite ear when they turn about five).

American Red Cross volunteers are working tirelessly to help people coping with the catastrophic impacts of Hurricane Fiona on Puerto Rico and the remnants of Typhoon Merbok on Alaska.
Ways to Help - a request from our very own District Membership Chair, Camilla Boolootian
We have set up a Rotary District 5170 microsite so members and/or clubs can give a financial gift to support the disaster relief efforts: https://www.redcross.org/donate/cm/rotarydistrict5170-pub.html/  This link will capture Rotary District 5170 cumulative giving and each donor will receive a tax donation receipt from the Red Cross.
