A Message from District Governor Richard Flanders
My Fellow Rotarians:

It is an honor and privilege to serve as the District Governor for one of the leading Rotary Districts in the world.  Last year was one of the most challenging years in Rotary due to the Covid pandemic.  As we start a new Rotary Year, there is a great deal of hope and optimism in our Rotary Clubs as we are returning to live meetings to welcome back the in-person fun and fellowship, to network, to lead, to grow personally, and to serve locally and globally.  Coming out of the pandemic, our Rotary Clubs also have learned how to adapt, innovate, and be flexible by meeting virtually to retain members and to recruit new members to join the oldest and largest service organization in the world.

Despite coming out of the pandemic, our challenge remains great.  Our Rotary Clubs need to continue to provide the value of membership to our members and to enhance their engagement in Rotary.  We need to increase our ability to adapt and innovate to meet their needs and to retain their membership.  Because of our Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta’s initiative of Each One Bring One, Rotary leaders will need to motivate and inspire each Rotarian to commit to introduce at least one person to Rotary and to bring a guest to our club meetings.  We can do so by telling people the benefits of joining Rotary as outlined by our own District Past Rotary International President Richard D. King in his 20 Reasons To Join Rotary.

We join Rotary to serve and give back to our community and the world.  Rotary leaders have the duty and responsibility of asking each member to commit to taking part in the club’s fundraiser and to commit to participating in a club service project.  Coming out of the pandemic, the clubs can return to in-person fundraising.  Learning from the pandemic, the clubs can also have virtual and/or hybrid fundraising.  It is only with fundraising efforts that the club can do service projects in its community, give back, make, and increase our impact and expand our reach.

Finally, we ask each Rotarian in our District to contribute to the Rotary Foundation because we are in the business of service to help those who are less fortunate and underserved.  Albert Schweitzer, a Nobel Peace Prize-winning theologian and humanitarian once said, “I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.  Even if it’s a little thing, do something for those who have need of one’s help, something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.  For, remember, you don’t live in a world all your own.  Your brothers and sister are here too.”  By contributing to the Rotary Foundation, we together will not only Serve To Change The Lives of Others, but we will also Change Our Own Lives.

20 Reasons to Join Rotary
Richard D. King served as the Rotary International President in 2001-2002.  The following points were developed by then President-Elect Richard King when he served as membership chair for Rotary International. Use them often and freely to assist others in understanding the depth and breadth of Rotary's mission.

1. Friendship: In an increasingly complex world, Rotary provides one of the most basic human needs: the need for friendship and fellowship. It is one of two reasons why Rotary began in 1905.

2. Business Development: The second original reason for Rotary's beginning is business development. Everyone needs to network. Rotary consists of a cross section of every business community. Its members come from all walks of life. Rotarians help each other and collectively help others.

3. Personal Growth and Development: Membership in Rotary continues one’s growth and education in human relations and personal development.

From the District TRF Chair
Happy New Rotary Year! Congratulations again to the Rotary Club members of District 5170. We have significantly exceeded our goals, and have set a record for Annual Fund giving. I particularly thank the Club Foundation Chairs and the Club Presidents for working with their members to accomplish this significant achievement. While this was a team effort, I do need to acknowledge the role of the Oakland #3 Club in achieving this number, as their Club had a record $165,755 Annual Fund contribution.

Public Image
The new Rotary year has kicked-in, and our Public Image Team is looking forward to working with the clubs in providing guidance and support.  Most importantly is that we all become Rotary brand compliant by June 2022.  It is the key to our success in showcasing a consistent look and feel across District 5170.

Our goal is work together with Membership and Foundation committees as Public Image is the “energizer” in attracting new members-- more members =  foundation $$!

District International Service

Hello Rotarians,

The resources in District 5170 for international work are superb.

  • D5170 manages District Designated Funds (DDF) in a unique and eminently fair way. Every club gets an allocation of DDF based on their clubs past giving. Even if they don't have a large DDF allocation, they can partner with other clubs to get to the $16.7k minimum of DDF (with TRF change to 80% match) to be able to do a global grant.

District Vocational Service
Introducing L.I.O.N. - Leadership, Internships, Opportunities, and Networking Program. Founder Paul Harris was the original social networker and connector. Harris incorporated business networking and social good and scaled his vision of "Service Above Self" domestically and internationally. Today, 1.2 million members serve humanity through Rotary.

Since the pandemic claimed 600,000 lives, Americans lost jobs, reduced work hours, and found themselves in uncharted territory. Women were particularly affected by the loss of childcare, working from home, and remote schooling. Although hiring is up in the Bay Area, I believe Rotary is positioned to enhance Rotarian's and first-generation college students to secure meaningful work.

Darlene lives in Santa Cruz and her other passion is craft beer and premium wine.  She is a broker in the San Benito, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties working with restaurants, wine bars, taprooms and retail.

In Memoriam - Rebecca Boylan
In the summer of 2016, we were fortunate to have Rebecca Boylan join the Rotary Club of Almaden Valley.  From that very moment we knew we had added a Born Leader, she was a Rising Star.  Rebecca’s hard-work, organization and never willing to take “NO” for an answer instantly inspired us all.
