A Message from District Governor Richard Flanders
There are many reasons why we joined Rotary, among them the need for friendship and fellowship.  Another reason for becoming a Rotarian is the chance to do something to help somebody else because Rotarians provide community service to both local and global communities.  One way of doing something to help those who need help is to contribute to The Rotary Foundation Annual Fund Program.  By making a contribution to the Annual Fund Program, your donation comes back to your club in three years in the form of District Designated Funds (“DDF”) for your club’s use to do local and/or international service projects.

This Rotary year, the sixty-one clubs in our Rotary District 5170 have a goal of raising a total of $750,250 for the Annual Fund Program.  To date, we have raised 55% of our total goal.  The Rotary Foundation transforms your gift into projects locally and globally.  In our District, each club has one or more local projects funded by the DDF that is allocated to your club on July 1 of each year.  Additionally, our District normally has about sixty-five international service projects that are also funded by the DDF that is allocated to your club annually.  Rotarians in District 5170 are People of Action.  When we do projects, we are increasing our impact and expanding our reach and are “Serving To Change Lives.”

November is Rotary Foundation Month in Rotary.  In our District, we ask all Rotary clubs to promote The Rotary Foundation and the opportunity to give directly to the Annual Fund Program or the Rotary Foundation program that fits your passion.  By making a gift to The Rotary Foundation, you provide service to others and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace and strive to meet Rotary’s vision statement of “Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and ourselves.”

We thank you for your donation to the Rotary Foundation.  In the words of our own Past Rotary International President Richard D. King, “Rotary provides us with a chance to do something for somebody else and to sense the self-fulfillment that comes in the process and return of that satisfaction to one’s own life.  It is richly rewarding.”

International Service Committee Update
For our November D5170 International Chair regular session, Barbara Beery organized a great session, with Michael Reynolds, Palo Alto; Peter Sherris, Oakland #3; Sherry Auerbach, Los Altos; Alysa Sakkas and Jagi Shahani, Cupertino; with high-quality project intro presentations, great suggestions, and a collaborative brainstorming session around what fundraising strategies have been used, what has worked well, what has not, and ideas of ways to work within the district and beyond. (PS: Barbara also has a great article in the TRF Today Newsletter November issue, on collaborations on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) projects.)

Vocational Service Committee Update
We continue to gather information on vocational club activities and projects. In addition, we are working on how to promote and encourage high school students to seek careers in the trades; expand how Rotarians do business with one another and how to network through an online Yellow Pages; research local job opportunity partners and move the needle on mentoring and internships.

Be A Mentor
Rotary District 5170 is partnering with Be A Mentor to invite Rotarians to become Virtual Mentors to struggling youth. Mentoring studies show that mentored youth are 55% more likely to enroll in college, two times as likely to take a leadership role, and 52% less likely to skip school than youth without a mentor.

Be A Mentor’s founder and president, Robert Goetsch, is a Past President of the Fremont Rotary Club and a Rotarian of 30 years. We’re proud to work with Be A Mentor to support Rotary’s diversity, equity, and inclusion goals by caring for our diverse communities and bringing opportunities to historically disadvantaged populations.

Area 6 Rotarians Volunteer at Aromas Sports Park
(Original article from BenitoLink, November 15, 2021; article and photo credit to Reporter, Robert Eliason)

A group of volunteers drawn from local Rotary Clubs came together on Nov. 13 to plant a variety of shrubs in an area near the residential fence line of the Aromas Sports Park.

Over a dozen people worked alongside Bonny Seagraves, treasurer of the Aromas Community Center Foundation, which manages the park.

“We are putting in around 100 different shrubs from 15-gallon containers today,” Seagraves said. “The idea is to plant them as a mixed hedge to enhance the walking trail here to add beauty to the park.”
